Journey to Jo’Burg by Beverley Naidoo

709526I read this for the DiverseAThon, a readathon promoting diverse literature, and I chose it from my library’s online catalogue.

This children’s book was written by a South African author and discusses the segregation experienced throughout the Apartheid. This is a topic that I knew nothing about going into this book so it was great to get an introduction through a book meant for younger readers.

This book also has a lot of notes before and after the main story discussing the author’s own experiences during this time which really added to the severity of the situation.

However, I feel that this book was very linear and nothing unexpected happened. The characters didn’t seem to grow much though they learnt a lot about the world around them.

Overall I would definitely recommend this to younger readers and if you like reading children’s fiction as an adult you might find this a good introduction to the topic of Apartheid, as I did.

3 out of 5 stars!
