A Fish in Foreign Waters by Laura Caputo-Wickham

a_fish_in_foreign_waters_-_cover-295x300This children’s picture book discusses the difficulties that come along with being bilingual and being different to those around you. I think the messages that are put across are very important for young children as it teaches them more about other people’s experiences. On the whole, I really liked the story itself.

However, I do feel that the artwork is a little gender specific which it really didn’t need to be. Almost every page is largely pink and purple, and though there’s nothing wrong with that, I feel like most parents picking this up would see it as a ‘girl’s book’. I would still share this with my future son but I think that the book is unnecessarily gendered.
